There is much controversy on whether William Shakespeare was the author of his plays or not. This website mostly provides support that Shakespeare did write his plays. Many examples are shared such as his marriage certificate, his death in 1616, the fact that he was living in London in the year of 1601, and his birth in 1564. Something that I found was interesting was that after Shakespeare's death his comtemporaries dedicated the first folio of his work to the memory of Shakespeare. It also injcluded a verse which is also in the folio which reads, "His mind and hand went together and what he thought he uttered with that easiness that we hhave scarce recieved from him a blot in his papers." Read more on this website to find more reasons that may prove Shakespeare was the author of his plays.

     * There are several arguments included in this website for why Shakespeare did not write his plays. Focus on arguments one and three. Many of these arguments are very complex. They include hidden messages in Shakespeare's plays, and the impossibility that he wrote them. Something I learned from this website was that Shakespeare did not recieve a full education. This changed my point of view on Shakespearean controversy. Also, I learned about people who were more likely to have wrote these plays. For example, more educated Renaissance men were thought to write Shakespeare's plays. Some of these men were, Sir Francis Bacon or Edward de Vere (the Earl of Oxford).

   *  Just as the link above, this website mainly focuses on  why people think Shakespeare did not write his plays. This surprises me. In the website, the writer says, "there is little or no evidence that Shakespeare wrote his own works". Also, in many websites that I have looked at, there are several different arguments for why Shakepeare "did not"write his own plays. A few things that I found were interesting were that there are really no records of Shakespeare being an author. For example, most authors were painted. However, there are no portraits of Shakespeare. Next, on Shakespeare's parish registery, it lists him as a "Gent". Not an author or dramatist, but a "Gent". Finally,"On Shakespeare’s birth certificate, his name is spelled "Shaksper," and six signatures undisputed to be authentic are all spelled differently. Moreover, those six signatures are written in a horrible, virtually illegible scribble—one appearing much closer to that of an illiterate than to that of the most renowned writer ever." This is a very valid argument for why Shakespeare did not write his plays.

  *   This website that I found takes the side of those that believe that Shakespeare wrote his own plays.  A quote from the website says that: "...Shakespeare was Shakespeare, who was a genius, a brilliant Elizabethan ‘playmaker’."  There are a lot of interesting points on this website that lead to the belief that Shakespeare's plays were original, written by Shakespeare himself.  One of these points is that: "...Shakespeare used superbly in his 36 plays, poetry and Sonnets – allied to his own natural and well-apprenticed skills."  This is a good website to go to if you take Shakespeare's side in the controversy.

  http://www.shakespeare-authorship.org.uk/candidates.htm

*This next website that I found, includes three main candidates for the Shakespearean Controversy.  Their names are Edward de Vere, Francis Bacon, and Christopher Marlowe.  On this website, you can learn a lot about these candidates.  For example, Edward de Vere was an Earl of Oxford and has supposedly been the real author of Shakespeare's plays since 1930.  Another example is that Francis Bacon was a philosopher and a writer and many believe that he was too busy producing his own work, that there probably wasn't even any time to produce works as Shakespeare.  My last example is that Christopher Marlowe was a playwright and he was supposedly a ghost writer that was stabbed to death.  But others believe that he was alive and wrote plays and poetry under Shakespeare's name.  So, check out this website. This website also includes several pictures of these three candiates. There are even more facts about these men that are very interesting! Also, on the bottom of this website include other candidates that are not as popular. One is Queen Elizabeth herself! This website also has several links on the bottom and they talk about the arguments people have about this controversy.

http://www.bardweb.net/debates.html

* This website is a very interesting article about the shakespeare authorship debate. It focuses mainly on Shakespeare's lack of education. As you may know, Shakespeare was withdrawn from education in 1577 at the age of fourteen due to his father's financial  problems. He only recieved about seven years of formal education. This website takes Shakespeare's lack of education into consideration when talking about the Shakespearean authorship controversy. This website expresses many valid points such as his lack of education, lack of experiences, etc. Something I found that was interesting on this website was that Shakespeare never left his hometown of London! This is very interesting, because if he never left his hometown how was he inspired to write plays about many far away places? If you go on the home page you will see a picture of Edward de Vere (17th Earl of Oxford). He is one of the possible "Shakespeares". Some people believe he wrote Shakespeares works.

*On this website, you will find facts about Francis Bacon, a candidate for the Shakespearean Controversy.  On this link, you can read about how there are instances of Bacon's life in Shakespearean plays.  For example in the play "The Merry Wives of Windsor", there is an anecdote, or short story that Bacon was known to tell.  Also, if you scroll down on the page, there is a drawing of Bacon.  This helps the reader know what he probably looked like.

http://www.sirbacon.org/newsletter1.html#incidents

This website explains that Marlowe had to have written Shakespeare's plays because Marlowe died in 1593, and the plays were written during that timeline.  Marlovian experts prove that he wrote Shakespeare's plays.  There is also some information on Marlowe's death.  Also, there's information on how other writer support the points.  So, look on this website for some great information about Christopher Marlowe.

 http://www.trivia-library.com/b/who-really-wrote-shakespeare-plays-christopher-marlowe-part-2.htm

On this website you can find information about Edward de Vere and that he was a candidate for the Shakespearean Controversy.  It is said that Edward de Vere's poetry is better than Sir Francis Bacon's poetry.  Though, that is only an opinion.  Also, de Vere wrote a lot of sonnets in his life.  They were his specialty, and he wrote 154 of them, claiming to be Shakespeare.  Also, something that resembles him to Shakespeare is that his nickname was "Spear- Shaker".  Sounds familiar, doesn't it?  Though, he might not have written all of the plays because he died too early, in 1604.

This website is a nice website if you are looking for information about the candidates for the Shakespearean Controversy.  There are illustrations of each of the candidates.  Also, the main ones that we have talked about are written about. (Edward de Vere, Francis Bacon, Christopher Marlowe)  There are also paragraphs about other possible candidates that could have written Shakespeare's plays.  They are Walter Ralegh, William Stanley, Fulke Greville and Mary Sidney.  There are facts about each of the listed candidates including facts about their lives and written works.

After reading through a couple of these links, what is your view of the Shakespeare controversy? Do you think Shakespeare wrote his plays or not?

I think that Shakespeare really did write his plays. This is becuase in one of the links that I posted, it says that in 36 of his plays, Shakespeare applied his own skills that he is known to use. These are skills that Shakespeare does well, and if anyone were trying to use these skills, they wouldn't be as well used as Shakespeare.

Sam, today I found two links and included paragraphs. Could you try to find another link or two and add paragraphs as well?

Sam, today I added a few more things to some of our paragraphs, but some of them still need a little more work. I also added to our works cited and completed 3 more. Finally, I added one more link. We still need a few more links, so today can you try to find 2 more and write paragraphs for them? It might be helpful if you added to opur paragraphs. Or, you can help me finish the works cited. we only have until the end of the week, but I think we can finish.

I'll try to find 2 more links. You should mainly focus on the works cited page. If I finish the links and paragraphs, I will try to help with works cited.

I didn't get around to writing the paragraph for my link. I added my works cited to our document.

I chose two more links and wrote paragraphs for each. Though, they're not very good. I will try to work on the works cited page tonight if I have time along with all of the other homework we have. If you could finish works cited either tonight or tomorrow, that would be great. I will help and I will try to find one more link, unless you want to. Let me know what your plan is. Thanks!

Sam, I worked on the works cited today. I finished all the ones that I could except for one. I found the last two links, but the website wasn't allowing me to edit the page, so I added them to the works cited document. Please try to finish all the paragraphs, and I will take care of the works cited.

chloe said

It wasn't letting me upload the works cited document, but I saved it to the student drive so you can add to it.

Well, there is a problem, I can't get into the document! I will ask Mrs. Heer and see if we can work something out.

sam said

I still couldn't get into the works cited document. Mrs. Heer and I couldn't figure it out. Though, I found two more links and wrote paragraphs for them. So, all you need to work on is works cited. Mrs. Heer said that if you can't get into the works cited document at home, she can work something out with you to finish it on Monday. Good job on the page! I made it look pretty with cool font colors. :)

Excellent work, ladies! Your page is attention-getting without distracting from information! Nice use of technology with the animotos and wordles! Awesome paragraphs to annotate the web pages - I can really see how you began to synthesize the information that you learned from your research! It looks like you may be missing just a few Works Cited entries. Remember to follow MLA format. Overall - Awesome Work!! Very, very well done! See edline for your grade.
